Alberto Barrera Garza was born September 14, 1935 in Roma, Texas to Rodolfo and Margarita Barrera. He was one of ten children. He spent his childhood in Los Guerras, Tamaulipas, Mexico. As a teenager he moved to Texas. Where he worked in the agricultural fields and canneries. In 1954, he proudly registered for the military in Austin, Texas. While ready to serve his country, he was never called to serve. In 1961, at Santa Rosa, Texas, he met his beautiful wife Margarita (Rodriguez). They originally came to the Coachella Valley where they picked champagne grapes. In 1962 they moved to Moorpark, California where they began their family. Together they raised four children. Alberto was a proud member of Local 585 Laborers Union. Where he worked and learned his Masonry trade to become a Masonry Contractor. He built Randy’s Tires on High Street. He did all the concrete and block walls. Among other work like patios and block walls around Moorpark and surrounding areas. He was a true Artisan. He was a Mason for many years until his retirement in 2000. Horses were his passion. He raised and bred, award winning Quarter Horses. Alberto was also an amateur boxer in the early 60’s. He belonged to a boxing club and carried his membership card in his wallet. He also enjoyed watching boxing. Alberto enjoyed an active retirement. He woke up every morning to take care of his horses. Every fire season he would clear all the brush by hand, using a weed whacker all around his 10 -acre ranch. He did this up until the last brush season. He also worked at a local feed store for many years. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He enjoyed showing them about ranch life and teaching them how to ride horses. Alberto leaves behind his loving wife Margarita. His children: Yolanda Barrera, Albert Barrera Junior, Arturo Barrera (Cherie Dahlstrom-Barrera) and Enrique Barrera, and seven Grandchildren. He will be missed greatly.
