Maria Luisa "Lulu" Villela Cruz transitioned peacefully on the night of July 7th, 2024, with her loved ones by her side, in Ventura, CA, at the age of 71 .
Born on August 17, 1952, in Santiago Ixcuintla, Nayarit, Mexico, Lulu was the fourth of 11 siblings. She migrated to California, more specifically to Bardsdale, the heart of citrus ranching, and later to the local town of Fillmore in the early '70s. There, she married and raised her children. She was a deeply spiritual woman who attended Saint Francis of Assisi Church in Fillmore, and in her later years found comfort at a more peaceful and intimate church, San Salvador Mission in Piru. She also enjoyed spending time outdoors from feeding her backyard birds to camping. Lulu cherished family gatherings, cooking traditional Mexican dishes, singing along to her favorite melodies, and dancing at every opportunity. Throughout her lifetime she enjoyed playing barajas, bingo, scratchers, and spontaneous trips to casinos.
Lulu is survived by her children: Danny, Elias, Josue, Miriam, Malu, and Sammy along with their spouses, her nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, eight siblings, numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members. She was preceded in death by her husband Josue T. Cruz Sr., her parents, Bonifacio and Maria De La Luz Villela; and siblings, Genaro Villela and Elizabeth Torres.
As faith would have it, and as she wished, Lulu will find her earthly rest in Bardsdale Cemetery, embraced by the floral fragrance of citrus blossoms that welcomed her when she first planted her roots in this fertile land.
