Robert Matela

September 3, 1943 — January 27, 2026

We honor and celebrate the life of Robert Montayre Matela – a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Robert passed away on January 27, 2026, at the age of 82 in Camarillo, California. Though his passing was sudden, his family finds comfort in knowing he is now at peace in the loving presence of the Lord.

Born on September 3, 1943, in Tanay Rizal, Philippines, to Mariano Bautista Matela and Mary Rosario Montayre Matela, Robert lived a life marked by integrity, responsibility, and deep love for his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Teresita, his children Ruth, Ruby, Robert Jr., and Ryan, his sons-in-law Thomas and Andy, and his cherished grandchildren Elissa, Kaitlyn, Matthew, Nathaniel, and Mia Elise. He is also survived by his sisters, Melody and Marlyn, and is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Mariano Jr., Richard and Thomas, and sisters Frances, Rosalind, and Felicitas.

Robert earned his Bachelor of Secondary Education degree from San Ildefonso College and began his career as a high school teacher at Sierra Madre Institute. He was respected for his dedication and integrity, serving as a steady and compassionate mentor to his students. In 1982, Robert made the courageous decision to immigrate to the United States in search of greater opportunities for his family. He worked tirelessly, often holding two jobs, to build a stable foundation before reuniting with his family in 1988 and settling in Union City, California.

A man of few words, Robert expressed his love through quiet sacrifice, steadfast support, and hard work. He instilled in his children the values of education, perseverance, faith, and responsibility, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams.

In retirement, Robert found immense joy in caring for his grandchildren in Camarillo. He treasured the simple moments with them – singing songs, sharing stories, and cheering them on in all their endeavors. Music was a lifelong passion, from playing in his father’s rondalla band in the Philippines to enjoying karaoke and passing his love of music to his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching action movies, cheering for the Golden State Warriors and San Francisco 49ers, and spending time with his family.

A faithful Catholic, Robert placed his trust in God’s promises. His family holds close the comforting words of John 14:2-3: “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places… I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself.”

Robert’s life was defined by his steady presence, sacrifice, and enduring love for his family. His quiet strength shaped the lives of those he loved, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
