It is with immeasurable sadness we announce the passing of Vilma Gacutno Latham (Vilma Modesto Gacutno), who unexpectedly departed this life on May 20th, 2025, at the young age of 63. Born on December 6, 1961, in Basey, Samar, Philippines, Vilma’s life was a beautiful testament of love, warmth, kindness, compassion, generosity, and selfless devotion to the care of others.
Vilma began her life journey in the Philippines, where she first attended secretarial school. In 1980, she moved to Guam, and by 1982, she had made her way to the mainland United States, eventually settling in Ventura County, California, which she came to call home. Over the years, Vilma lived in many places between the east and west coasts, but regardless of her geographic location, Vilma always carried with her a warm heart, tenderness, bright spirit and smile, that lit every room she walked into. Vilma’s salient beauty was not only physical, but transcended in volumes internally, displaying a grace and loveliness others were attracted to.
She later completed her education in San Diego as a certified medical assistant, but it was in her role as a caregiver for the elderly that Vilma found her true calling. Her innate and tremendous kindness, unwavering patience, and deep empathy made her a beloved figure among those she cared for. Vilma’s life was a quiet testament to the beauty of service and the joy found in nurturing others. Furthermore, Vilma had a special relationship and connection with God, which epitomized a strong woman of prayer, faithfulness and devotion.
An exceptional cook, Vilma was known far and wide by family and friends as the best cook ever—especially when it came to her renown Filipino dishes. Her meals were more than just nourishment; they were expressions of love, affection, connection, memory, bonds, and tradition, shared around tables full of laughter and warmth.
Vilma is survived by her beloved daughters, Veneill and Heidilynn, and her adored grandchildren, Elijah, Kayden, and Isabel. Elijah, whom she helped raise for his first seven years, was the light of her life. Vilma was one of six sisters and three brothers, and she now joins in eternal rest her loving parents, Silvio and Elena, as well as beloved younger sister Maxinia and dearest nephew Alvaro. Additionally, Vilma was the cherished partner of Matthew Filomena, love of her life for nearly forty-two years. She is number one in his heart and soul, eternally.
Vilma touched the lives of everyone she met—with a gentle yet gorgeous smile, a heartfelt story, or a plate of food made with love. Her presence was a blessing and a gift, and her absence will leave a void in so many hearts.
A celebration of Vilma’s life will be held to honor the legacy she leaves behind—one of love, family, and the quiet strength of a life well lived.
She will be forever missed, forever loved, and forever carried in our hearts.
